Participants learnt what the requirements of the regulation are and how they had been implemented and enforced so far, they also gain an understanding of due diligence and how to use NEPCon’s tools to conduct your own. Guest speakers were also present to give different perspectives and experiences. The afternoon session involved an interactive session using NEPCon’s new Sourcing Hub and the risk assessments and tools available on it to investigate and discuss various sourcing scenarios across a series of themes.

Meriam Wortel - Dutch Competent Authority
Meriam is inspector expertise within the domain of Nature, at the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (the Competent Authority). She is responsible for the implementation and enforcement of EUTR and FLEGT. Meriam gave an overview of the enforcement activities of the Competent Authority, the recent developments and challenges. |
Debora van Boven-Flier - Benelux Manager, NEPCon
Debora is responsible for the coordination and execution of NEPCon's services in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. As a timber legality expert, she is regularly involved in a variety of assignments including analytical work, projects, training and development of NEPCon's timber legality tools and systems. Debora's professional experience encompasses seven years as Senior Forestry Consultant at FORM International, where she was engaged in PEFC conformity assessments and involved in international projects on FLEGT and FSC certification. Her past work record also includes FSC auditing work and advisory services for companies preparing for FSC chain of custody certification. |
Alexandra Banks - Senior Forest Legality Specialist, NEPCon
Alexandra has several years of experience on international forest policy and international trade regulation. Over the last 3.5 years Alexandra has worked with NEPCon LegalSource clients and legality projects. Alexandra has extensive project experience in the Asia-Pacific, in particular Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia. Working in particular on VPA and EUTR related projects. Before joining NEPCon Alexandra worked as a senior Policy adviser in the Australian Government on the Australian Illegal Logging Prohibition Act 2012. |

This workshop was conducted as part of the joint project ‘Supporting Legal Timber Trade’ aimed at supporting timber-related companies in Europe with knowledge, tools and training in the requirements of the EU Timber Regulation.
